Long-Term Safety of Ketogenic Diets - with Dr. Bret Scher
In this video, Dr. Bret Scher addresses common misconceptions and concerns surrounding the long-term safety and nutritional adequacy of ketogenic diets. Dr. Scher emphasizes the importance of weighing potential risks against known benefits. For instance, psychotropic medications, despite often worsening overall physical and metabolic health, are considered beneficial because they can alleviate symptoms of serious mental illnesses. In contrast, many patients experience incredible benefits from ketogenic therapy without harmful side effects. In numerous cases, a medical keto diet can even put psychiatric conditions like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depression into complete remission.
What You'll Learn:
▪️Long-Term Safety: Is it safe to maintain ketosis over an extended period?
▪️Nutritional Adequacy: Can a ketogenic diet lead to nutrient deficiencies or disordered eating habits?
▪️Fiber and Phytonutrients: Are fiber intake and phytonutrients compromised on a ketogenic diet?
▪️Heart Disease Risk: Is there an increased risk of heart disease with long-term ketosis?
▪️Short-Term vs. Long-Term Outcomes: Is ketosis only effective for short-term outcomes?
There is a lot of information circulating online touting the risks of long-term ketogenic diets that is completely unfounded. Dr. Scher tackles these prevalent questions, analyzing scientific evidence and dispelling myths surrounding ketogenic diets.

Bingo. Most MDs and internet gurus are willfully ignorant on the difference between therapeutic and general diets. Dash is a pretty good general diet. They think there is one ultimate diet for everything. When my MD wanted me to eat “healthy” in ways that were harmful, I finally asked her, ok what’s your favorite MEDICINE. I want to take just one medicine and I want it to be the healthiest so I can take it and be healthy. I want the one BEST medicine. She finally got it when she heard how ridiculous that sounded.

I disagree. There's a lot more to a vegetarian or vegan diet, and to stay on the premises, one which keeps sugar intake low and avoids processed food. I am a vegetarian heavily leaning vegan. I am the healthiest I've ever been. I have driven my blood pressure down and my IBS is gone. I also exercise regularly. By the way, in college I was pretty much hammered with instruction on the nature of scientific method. Jumping into criticism of one study in order to attack an entire dietary philosophy is just as bad as drawing a conclusion based on one study. You should check out the dietary philosophy of Dr. Joel Fuhrman who supports just about every statement he makes with scientific research. In addition, Dr. Alan Mandell who has an exquisitely fine knowledge of nutritional biochemistry.

It was a bit shocking to hear you quote from WHO that the evidence on the long-term health impacts of vegetarian and vegan diets remains incomplete. I was shocked because we have so much data on the Adventist Chistians who have death records back to the early 1900s and are currently the longest living culture on Earth. I found the quote on the WHO site and it is over a document attempting to answer this question, and it does by recommending plant based diets. All health organisations I can find have no doubt that plant based diets have no rivals regarding health statistics and research.

I was keto for about one year but was always dehydrated and I did everything I could. After all I decided to add carbs back in form of fruits, honey, some vegetables, raw milk and sweet potatoes. Now its a bit better but still I'm dehydrated. Really, don't know what to do now.. My hormones are imbalanced for sure but I really don't know how to fix this issue..

I adopted a low carbohydrate / ketogenic diet 7 years ago for insulin resistance and T2D resistant to metformin. I reversed my T2D in a few weeks and went on to lose 30 kg with no efforts at all, adopting a 16/8 or omad life style. My fatty liver has regressed and triglycerides are very low matched with a small rise in cholesterol bound fats. During the weight loss phase I would check my ketone levels (0.2 - 2.5) together with my blood sugar but I rarely do so now. With the approbation of my oncologists I continued my diet through an 8 month chemotherapy for a generalised lymphoma and the exceptional tolerance and response to this treatment was attributed by them to the low carbohydrate diet. I occasionally introduce carbs and as a result experience hunger pangs and low energy that indicates that I am still insulin resistant. Insulin resistance and carbohydrate intake is a slippery slope on which I no longer venture. A retired physician, at 79 I am back to university to study languages and I definitely believe that for me this diet improves cognition. I have recently had a lithotricy for kidney stones that were present before my diet but have increased in size and the question is whether calcium oxalate stones develop under this diet. The challenge is isolation and incredulity with my peers, many of whom have adopted this diet.

I first adopted a ketogenic diet about 15 years ago, dropping net carbs to under 30 and losing nearly 50 lbs, which brought me from Class 1 obese to normal for my height. I know now that 30-50 grams of carbs will hold my weight steady. Over that range for more than a few days and I'll begin weight gain. Under it and I'll lose. No metabolic issues and great panels. In contrast, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend between 225 and 325 grams of carbs a day....TEN TIMES what I consume. No wonder nearly 40% of American adults aged 20 and over are obese. 71.6% of adults aged 20 and over are overweight, including obesity. Healthy carbs, my ass! Way to sell us out to Big Ag and Big Fast Food, Mayo Clinic and FDA!

You forgot the best source of vitamins and nutriens in ketogenic diet and that´s eggs. Ketosis doesn´t stop after 6 months unless you start to eat carbs again. I´ve been on keto for 15 months now and only times i have dropped off ketosis were at the begining when i ate too much carbs couple times. Even that i had fat adabtation, i couldn´t eat much of carbs without falling off ketosis. Now after several months of keto i can eat more carbs but i just don´t. I still try to limit my carbs for 20 grams per day. But if i eat more that means that i´ve eaten alot of vegetables and some of those carbs are fiber that does not absorb in the body.

this is a great point, Dr. scher, that any diet can induce disordered eating. this is not keto diet specific. in fact, what is disordered eating? any healthy dietary pattern deviating from an ultraprocessed food diet?? I have done the fodmap diet various times which is also accused of being dangerous long term and induce disordered eating. I opinion that both keto diet and fodmap diet can rectify disordered eating as both diets provide a clear eating plan for health minded individuals, containing nutritious foods that contribute to keeping people healthy.

It's amazing that so much effort goes into trying to disprove low-carb diet benefits! Is not the opposite - a high-carb/sugar diet - the very pathway, over time, to Type 2 diabetes? Do some reading on mental decline, often termed Type 3 diabetes, as well as other metabolic ailments and then consider whether low-carb or high-carb is the better route for long-term health. A Keto Diet does not ban ANY foodsort. Choose to your heart's content, as long as daily carbs are kept within the accepted boundaries of moderation. Read the comments below for the benefits these folk have achieved, or better yet, try it yourself.

I suppose it depends on the type of ketogenic diet, Lots of saturated fat probably not great. Mother nature spoke about ketosis in the Inuit, who have a gene that keeps them from going into ketosis. They also have pretty short-lived lives.

    • @RC-qf3mp
      @RC-qf3mp 3 дні тому

Inuit have zero heart disease which is the #1 killer for Americans for the past several decades. Traditional Inuit do not have ‘short lived lives’, and when they do die, there’s no evidence that ketosis has anything to do with it. Yet, your comment contradicts itself - if Inuit have a special gene so that they can eat low carb without getting into ketosis, then they are not on a ketogenic diet (according to your speculation), and if they are not on a ketogenic diet, then how is it “Mother Nature” has ‘spoken’ about them with respect to ketosis? If what you say is true, then Inuit diet has no relevance to the topic of the video - ketogenic diet’s long-term safety - b/c the Inuit, according to you, don’t eat a ketogenic diet. A keto diet is a diet that induces ketosis; if Inuit can’t get into ketosis, then they aren’t on a keto diet. Inuit also don’t have heart disease, which is the #1 killer of Americans for decades. Congratulations on managing to pack in so much nonsense with so few words. Well done! 👏

0:22 Everyone should be in ketosis long term, it's just our natural homeostasis state.

There are doctors who use those medications together, but of course, the safety and efficacy is different for each individual.

It is hard to believe how low is the level of medical culture among physicians! The last plandemia has revealed that fact beyond any doubts. It was a festival of incompetence, ignorance and arrogance

Bret, you always say that "You always have to ask your medic.." but i am sorry to say that almost the entire doctors are old-school and can not not give the right advice that i need. They always want to set you on prescription, so why dont you stop saying so? Im on my third clinic in a short time and they are all the same, both doctors and the dietists. Now i am not allowed to change clinic in 12 month (un Sweden) but its no better to change to another clinic..... Stop saying this all the time Bret!

Dr. Scher is a physician and has to abide by professional ethics of the medical profession. He is compelled to abide by those rules, which no doubt include something to the effect that he can’t just give medical advice to people wily-nily if they aren’t his patients and if he hasn’t gone through the long list of medical issues a particular person has and knows what drugs and supplements they are taking and what interactions there could be. There are plenty of people who also need to be on other kinds of diets for their health issues - like an anti-histamine diet, or a diet rich in some nutrient that they lack, or a diet that avoids all kinds of allergens, or a diet that doesn’t interact with some life-saving medication.

Why not ask if it is safe to stay non-ketotic long-term? Keto heals.
